of porcine luxuries and shandygaffs.
Nestled in a signless East Village stone facade is the Bourgeois Pig, a loungey restaurant (or restaurant-like lounge) of aristocratic delights. The crowd is Village-hip, the ambience Bohemian burlesque fantasy, the soundtrack vintage blues, the cocktails inspired and stiff, the food continental European and excellent.
Push back the velvet red curtains and arrive early (before 8pm) to secure your tiny table (or grab a bar seat — more spacious than the cramped tables during rush hours), complete with antique wooden chairs and Victorian trim.
There’s an expensive wine list, but don’t bother — the draw here is the cocktails, varied and unique. The ginger-infused shandygaff is a strong spin on a traditional English summer beverage; le moins promises a liquid concoction of Belgian beer, chocolate and raspberries.
Complete your meal with a pot of savory fondue. Try the gruyere, herbed out with rosemary and not your traditional Swiss mix. Complement the cheesy goodness with your included plate of fresh fruits, olives, vegetables and breads.
There are desserts, too, which we didn’t try. The Pig is not cheap, and the crowds grow fast, but savor your meal and you’ll feel privy to the coolest underground Bohemian spectacle in the Village.
