parting: such sweet-ass sorrow.
So I’ve been packing up my stuff this week because yes, I’m moving out of my apartment this weekend. It’s the end of an era, one year living on my own, financially and residentially independent of my parents. But alas, this place is just too damn expensive to warrant staying another year, especially by myself, and especially after rent for my unit has been raised $200 per month after only one year. Andrew moved out last week to a place in Astoria, a cooler, cheaper neighborhood that’s slightly farther north in Queens and thus slightly less convenient than LIC. And so the era of Long Island City comes to a close, accompanied by a week-long packing session which has proven slightly less chaotic than the college dorm frenzies of old.I can’t help but feel like this is yet another one of those Major Transitions in life, even though I’m just moving out of one apartment back home. It kind of sucks to think of the hour and a half commute that I’ll have to endure yet again, but I think things will work out in the long run. After a couple months, I’ll have a newly renovated apartment inside Manhattan, which might somehow mean that I’m moving up in the world. From my comfortable vantage point in Armonk, devoid of the temptations of drinking regularly on Wednesday nights, I will be able to plot my next move in life and execute with a semblance of confidence and sureness. At least, that’s the hope. My first GRE verbal practice section did not go well. But that’s another story.
In two days I’ll be saying goodbye to the high rise apartment building known as East Coast 6. In the meantime, I posted some photos I took of the neighborhood recently. Two of the high rises did not exist when I first moved in one year ago. I bet in another year, at least two or three more buildings will have gone up by then. Amazing how fast New York moves…fast enough for you to see the mountains rise.
